ARTPOP first impressions.
The Fame was about making all-around good pop music, Born This Way was about making loud and slightly experimental pop music. The Fame followed the tongue-in-cheek theme of living the high-life, while Born This Way's ideas centralized in Gaga's criticisms of society and herself. The Fame was an easy-to-digest dancey pop record, while Born This Way tried to put a bit more personal meaning into things while playing with less-than-conventional sounds.
ARTPOP does this weird thing where one song will lay down clever but simple pop lyrics layered over an extremely exotic synth blend, while another wails an actually satisfying empowerment ballad that sounds like something you might see top the charts. I’d find it hard to believe that Lady Gaga didn’t think to herself when conceiving this record, “How do I appeal to Top 40 listeners while not being cliche?”
ARTPOP is all over the place in the best possible way. There’s songs about being a rich bitch, there’s songs about self-deprication caused by relationships , there’s songs about having sex dreams with the wrong person and there’s songs about saying fuck you to tabloids. Most are dancey, some are surprisingly dark and haunting. And that’s the kind of formula that made The Fame Monster work so well years ago - combining the silly with the bitchy dance vibes with that sometimes sincerity.
When you step back and examine ARTPOP as a whole work, you come to realize that its essence is FUCK THIS ITS JUST A REALLY GOOD MOTHERFUCKING ALBUM TO DANCE AND DO OTHER THINGS TO OKAY GOOD JOB A+ WOULD BE SEDUCED AGAIN
